19th century growing techniques used by early
European settlers, with treasured heirloom
varieties used in Old Wisconsin. |
Located on 576 acres of
wooded hills in the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, it is the
brain child of The Wisconsin Historical Society.
This is a recreation of
working farmsteads and village settlements during the late 19th century.
During that time, waves
of European immigrants, such as the Swiss and Germans, came to America's
heartland in search of a better life for themselves and their families.
Old World Wisconsin
boasts of being the world's largest museum dedicated to the history of rural
life of these hardworking immigrants during this period.
Not to miss are the
thirteen different heirloom gardens featuring heirloom fruit, vegetables,
flower, and herbs as set out in the late 19th to early 20th century.
Historic authentic
gardening techniques are used in each garden. Each garden with their heritage
plant varieties; and the cultural techniques used to grow these plants, are the
result of extensive research into their past history.
There are activities
for visitors and workshops if you are so inclined to attend.
