                               GLOSSARY  N - O

 

Naked flower -              flower without perianth.

Nematodes -                microscopic soil dwelling worms that are

                                    plant pests, feeding on leaves, roots and stems.

                                    Some species of nematodes are beneficial by

                                    parasitizing insect pests.

Node -                          a usually swollen part of the stem bearing a side

                                    branch or leaf.

Nodule -                       pea-like bodies growing on the roots of Legumes.

                                    The nodules contain a nitrogen-fixing bacteria

                                    that convert nitrogen from the air into a plant usable

                                    form of nitrogen.

Nut -                            a hard shelled fruit with one seed that is indehiscent.

 

                

                

               GLOSSARY  O

 

Obtuse -                             blunt and rounded.

Odd-pinnate -                     a pinnate leaf with a single leaf at the apex.

Oedema -                           small, corky raise spots found on the underside

                                          of leaves, esp. in geranium leaves. This is

                                          caused by cell breakdown due to excessive

                                          moisture

Offset -                               small bulblets that form at the base of mature

                                          mother bulbs.

Open-pollinated -               When plants are pollinated naturally by wind or

                                          insects.

Ovary -                               the part of the pistil that produces future seeds.

Ovule -                               the part of the ovary that develops into the seed.
